As Food Lion’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Corporate Responsibility, Canipe oversees the Real Estate and Store Development departments, as well as the Corporate Responsibility department.  Named to this position in 2008, Canipe is responsible for the new store growth, construction, maintenance and equipping of Food Lion’s 1,300 stores, as well as excess property disposition.  In addition, Canipe is responsible for leading Food Lion LLC Corporate Responsibility efforts, focusing on fulfilling Delhaize Group’s Corporate Responsibility strategy around Products, People and Planet. He is a member of the Executive Committee of Food Lion LLC.

Canipe came to Food Lion in 2001 as director of Strategic and Business Analysis. In his two years as director, Canipe made significant contributions in the areas of short-term strategy through the development of the business plan process and long-term strategy through the Concept Renewal Project. In 2003 Canipe was named vice president of Business Strategy and in 2007 he was named vice president of Dry Category Management.

Prior to Food Lion, Canipe worked with the Procter & Gamble Company from 1990 to 2001. In his last position there, he was associate director of Finance in the North American Baby Care Products organization. He also held management positions in Global Financial Analysis.

Formerly the Sector Manager for LEED for Retail at the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Justin Doak is now the founder of BlueBin, Inc, a sustainability guidance firm for retailers. In this capacity, Justin and his team will work to position retailers and developers as environmental leaders through the discovery and implementation of innovative business strategies that not only yield savings, but strengthen brand equity by connecting with emerging green consumer markets.

Justin is also a partner of Austin Refuel, a Texas based company that has developed a closed loop waste-to-resource network for Quick Service Restaurants, Shopping Centers and Convention Centers. In this capacity Justin works with operations teams to ensure their waste grease is properly disposed and efficiently transported to a regional Biodiesel processing plant where the waste is repurposed into clean burning B100 Biodiesel and redistributed back to transport fleets.

Roger Holt’s practice focuses primarily on environmental and land use law representing developers and owners of real estate in transactional, entitlement, and governmental compliance matters. Mr. Holt’s practice includes intensive environmental and land use due diligence in real estate transactions, investigation and identification of environmental risks with regard to soil and ground water contamination and hazardous materials matters, air quality regulations, and representation before federal, state and local agencies on compliance matters. Mr. Holt has worked for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office as Assistant City Attorney, where he prosecuted environmental enforcement actions and represented the City in actions challenging major commercial and industrial developments involving environmental, planning, zoning, permitting and annexation issues.

Lisa Loweth

Lisa Loweth is a sustainability strategist active in the retail real estate sector. She has 21 years of progressive experience developing programs and leading cross-functional teams.

As former Vice President of Sustainability for General Growth Properties, Lisa was responsible for developing and directing sustainability plans and programs across the company to maximize environmental and financial benefits. In two years her shared leadership approach established integrated programs that continue to flourish and produce meaningful results.

Lisa currently serves on the Environmental Subcommittee and RetailGreen Conference Planning Committee for the International Council of Shopping Centers. She participated in the recent USGBC LEED Core & Shell Shopping Center Working Group and EPA ENERGY STAR Climate Partnerships Mall Focus programs. Lisa is a frequent participant in panel presentations and benchmarking groups focused on green strategy and corporate social responsibility in business and real estate.

Lisa’s retail real estate experience includes six years in cross-functional business process improvement, six years in asset management, and eight years in marketing.

L.J. is responsible for the development and implementation of Polo Ralph Lauren programs for Facilities Management, Energy Conservation and other related functions for all new and existing retail stores and distribution centers. L.J. has worked in similar capacities for Saks Fifth Avenue, Carter Hawley Hale Stores, Johnson Controls Inc. and the Tatas in India. He has a masters degree in Mechanical Engineering and is a Certified Energy Manager.

John Rockwell, AIA, LEED AP

Session: McDonald’s Eco Learning Lab

As Sustainability Manager for McDonald’s USA, John Rockwell has the primary job of developing and implementing green building practices within the context of McDonald’s US development and strategic planning for LEED restaurants.  Rockwell joined McDonald’s in 2005 with ten years of commercial and public architectural experience. John’s work and passion towards sustainability has been well received within McDonald’s and has gained outside interest from the New York Times and QSR magazine.

He is responsible for constructing consistent guidelines and procedures for LEED certification that are in alignment with the McDonald’s US green building strategy on a short and long-term plan.  Energy efficiency and sustainable concepts that can work within the McDonald’s business are among his top priorities.  Rockwell is a professionally licensed architect and a LEED accredited professional.

Prior to McDonald’s, Rockwell’s experience hit a wide range of markets but most notably with his green building experience starting in 2001 that inevitably led to Bolingbrook high school, the first LEED certified high school in Illinois.

Rockwell has had a long relationship with the USGBC Chicago chapter and currently serves on the board of directors.  He has served as a guest speaker representing McDonald’s green efforts in events such as ICSC Recon, ICSC Idea Exchange, Chain Leader webcasts and will be guest speaker in several events in 2009 including NRA (National Restaurant Association) annual conference, EEI (Edison Electric Institute) Utility Conference, Chain Store Age SPECS Conference, and Green 4 Retail Conference.
